As we conduct our aerial surveys, there are cameras attached to the plane taking thousands of images. In the future, the goal is to use such images to monitor marine species using artificial intelligence (AI). Although, the first steps are to (1) compare images to aerial observers and (2) train the AI system which requires manually reviewing each image to label animal detections through a custom-designed application developed by our collaborators at Murdoch University. This means when we are not flying, we are busy reviewing thousands of images!!
